Rain sensitive wash wipe not working

Anyone else having problems with their rain activated wash wipe. Mine wipes once when I turn it on then doesn't wipe at all - no matter how much rain falls on the windscreen.
Tried changing the sensitivity switch on the stalk from lowest to highest to see if that gave it a nudge, but made no difference and did not induce a wipe when I changed the setting.
Also tried throwing jugs of water at the windscreen to see if I could activate it but just get the one wipe moving from off to intermittent.
I suspect its faulty. Or is this a common problem that will need an "upgrade"?
