Recommended upper charging limit

Hi All
I only picked up my id3 a couple of days ago so still exploring.
However, please can someone tell me why the We Connect ID app recommends setting the upper charging limit to 80% for an optimum charging session? Why not 100%? I’m 20% down on my range before I’ve even started!
Many thanks

It’s to prolong the overall life of the batteries, 80% is recommended by the manufacturers of most EVs - not just VW.
When you use a rapid charger (50kW+) the management system on the car slows the rate significantly once you’re above 75-ish%
Charge to 100% when you really need the range, and to 100% occasionally to trigger a re-balance across the individual cells within the pack, but to 80% as the norm.

Thanks very useful link, I am finding all sorts of useful links on the Volkswagen website which are general for all Volkswagens but which I haven't found reading about the ID.3.scott28tt wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 9:03 am ......

In the link it states:
"3. To fully charge the vehicle (100%) use a charge timer in the charge manager and then drive off immediately after charging is completed."
Am I correct the ID.3 does not have timed charging and so it is not possible to do this apart from manually?

Timed charging arrived with the 2.0 / 0783 software, but that’s only being installed on new cars or ones that go into the workshop with faults - it will be generally available on all cars as part of the 2.1 rollout in February/March.

That's interesting info from VW, but the opposite of the guidance for the electric Mini: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=360&p=1576#p1576

A respected electrochemist, Euan McTurk (@106euan), has just said on Twitter:
I think this is good advice for anyone who is only doing local short trips and only ever charges to VW’s recommended 80%.
(BMS = Battery Management System)A monthly charge to 100% is good to calibrate the BMS. I wouldn't proceed to leave it at 100% for several days or weeks though - time the full charge and balance to finish a few hours before you next drive the car.

Hmm, odd. I would go back into both to check they are set correctly. When setting from the app make sure the car is in an area of good mobile signal. I’ve never had a problem restricting the charge level to 80%
I experienced a bug (car or server?) with previous versions of the software where:
- if you started charging on the app and the battery charge level was already above the charge limit the car would still charge
- if you charge charging on the app and the battery charge level was below the charge limit the car would stop charging at the charge limit

Ours is set at 80% max in the app. I've just had to unplug the car at 91% because it has kept on charging. I cant see a way to stop it charging in the app either.
Strangely, the app and the car both say 91% and 219 miles but that would be 240 at 100%. How can this be?

Did you have the car controlling a scheduled charge by any chance?
As for your mileage question, were you expecting to see the WLTP figure of 260-ish, or are you wondering about something else?
App crashed during a charge while on a public charger. It showed the car charging but the level and range had froze, caused a panic run back to the car. Car showed the same readings. Stopped charge. Got home then reinstalled app, all was well the next day with both showing the correct values after they had managed to sync. You should be able to start and stop the charge using the green/red slider.

Sorry for the 6 month late reply but we were on Holiday and completely missed your answer. Today is appropriate because my wife has just charged her car and is asking again.scott28tt wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 6:02 amFolkramfer wrote: ↑Tue Jul 06, 2021 11:41 pm Ours is set at 80% max in the app. I've just had to unplug the car at 91% because it has kept on charging. This is the picture today:
1) App says charging is set to 80%.
2) App says car is 100% charged and has 199 miles
3) Car says it is Charged to 100% and has 206 miles
Our questions are:
a) Why does it not charge to just 80% as per the app setting?
b) Why, if it is at 100%, does it not have about 261 miles?
c) Why do the app and the car show different miles?

A. No idea, what was the maximum set as in the car?
B. Because it’s cold, and that 261 miles is a WLTP lab test conducted at much more efficient temperatures
C. The app shows data stored by VW, the car must have sent an update to VW then made a new range calculation

Thamks for that. Checking, the car was set to charge to 100% even though the app was to 80%. Now fixed in the car.
