Octopus have just jacked up prices for their Go tariff. I signed up to Octopus a week ago on the 15p perKw day time / 5p overnight and now they have reneged on this and want to charge me 23p perKw which comes into effect for new customers on the 14th Oct. I’ve raised a complaint as they are not honouring the deal I signed up to. I thought they treated their customers right.

Fair play to you. Far better to be happy with your supplier choice than chase the cheapest.

Overnight is still 5p Kw on the Octopus Go which is fair enough just don’t like being enticed onto a deal only for them to change the deal to a more expensive on once you have moved across.

That's very bad form :-( If you're on Twitter, tweet Greg (the CEO/MD) and ask him to wade in; there are plenty of examples of folks getting issues unstuck that way.

At the rate electricity pricing is going Octopus will have to prise my 13.8p/5.0p Go tariff from my cold, dead hands.

Finally while I appreciate this is anecdata and won't be everyone's experience, Octopus have been by far the best energy supplier I've ever had. As a recent example my "smart" meter has been out of action since March 2021 due to a broken firmware update from the meter manufacturer being applied by the DCC, which meant Octopus couldn't pull meter data. They were perfectly within their contractual rights to move me off Go as the smart meter wasn't now smart through absolutely no fault of their own, but didn't. As they were unable to bill me they haven't charged me anything for electricity for the last 6 months, and when the smart meter started working again Octopus have put extra work unasked into recovering the stored meter reads for the last 6 months and then billing me at the Go tariff rather than just grabbing a meter read and billing me at standard variable for the "gap" when the meter firmware prevented meter reads happening. I'm sure this kind of quiet customer focus happens in other providers, but it hasn't been my own experience, and I've used a lot of providers over the years.

Also my experience: Octopus have been by far the best energy company to deal with, and were exemplary when they installed an isolator switch, smart meters and EV charge point on the same day.

If you're feeling masochistic, you can always join Scottish Power (we were forced onto them when Tonic went bust) and you'll find out why they get 1* on TrustPilot with reviews (like mine) which start with "If I could award zero stars....". Transferred to Octopus ASAP and so far haven't regretted it.

Was it a fixed rate deal? If not, they can do what they like with the prices. I believe they don’t have exit fees? If that is still so, you can move to someone else. Good luck with that though.

Yes according to their website the Go tariff is fixed for 12 months. Others on this forum that have Octopus Go can confirm this hopefully.

Or perhaps the OP isn't in a position to start using the GO element until after 14th Oct because smart meter isn't set up/working properly yet?

Octopus have been pretty good with me even though my meter and charger installation didn't go too smoothly and required intervention from the electricity board.

That might be the case but my account talks to the fact that I’ll be moving to the OC GO tariff and at the time of signing up - I did so on the cheaper rates as detailed on their website. It’s no different to ordering & agreeing a deal / price for an ID3 and 10 days later VW jack up their prices and you are asked to pay the increased price. Most folks on the forum would take issue with that and tell VW to ….

You can only transfer onto the Go tariff once they have the consistent readings from your Smart meter, they make it very clear that until then, you are on whatever tariff you signed up with. I had to sign up to a tariff 2p a unit more expensive than I was on and then got told that it could be 12 months before I could get a smart meter. I was about to leave them when, after having PV panels installed, we discovered that my meter was so old that any excess power caused the meter to run backwards.. (they couldn't change it fast enough then)

Once it was installed I still had to push them to acknowledge my smart meter was sending info as after three weeks of it being installed they were still saying they jad no electric readings. I pointed out that they had had Gas figures from the second day it was installed so that seemed strange. Later that day I was switched to the Go Tariff.

Ruthf take a look at GreenenergyUk and their Tide tarrif. 7.5p from 0000-0700 and much higher rates 1600-2000, will vary by location. Have been with them for 20 odd years because of their desire to sell only 100% green electricity and gas, which they do. All their gas is biomethane, not a carbon offset in sight!
Octopus sounds like they have incredibly cheap rates, but I wonder how long they can sustain that model? Sounds like new contracts are being charged higher tarrifs now?

Out of interest I did a quick greenenergyuk quote for us here.

Get A Quote Green Energy Tariffs Renewable Energy Quote GEUK.png

Some of those unit charges are a bit “ouch” and no sign of the 7p rate for us here. Shame, their mission I can get behind.

I think it just goes to show how fluid the energy market is. My tarrif in my location was set in February and is fixed for a year or two. Any quote you get now will reflect current market conditions, hence it's misleading to ask others what they pay and expect to pay the same. The best deals are often fixed term and by definition not easily reproducible. Have to say that overnight rate you were quoted shocked me.

Totally agree, but equally I didn’t think there was a single “acceptable” rate on that rate card. The standing charge and the weekday peak rate were full-on “wtf” moments here!

Quick update - just received an email from Octopus apologising for the miscommunication and confirming that as I started the onboarding process before the price increase on the 22nd Sept that they will honour the previous GO tariffs - I.e circa 15p Per KW and the usual 5p from 00:30 to 04:30. Needless to say I’m relieved and delighted - more importantly Octopus have sorted it.

ruthf - I came across this site (https://www.smarthomecharge.co.uk/guide ... -costs-low) this morning which you may find useful as a comparison between different "EV" tarrifs. Not sure how current (!) they are but useful to see how your Ecotricity compares across a range of other offerings.
Happy hunting.

Excellent news nunp! I'm assuming that's locked in now for 12 months for you ?
