Are the black bits of the ID3 alloy range actually alloy, or do we have skinny alloys with plastic inserts screwed in?

My mate's got a new A1 and a lot of the wheel is these black plastic inserts.

Alloys look great but they're a terrible marketing ploy costing more to buy, making cleaning a nightmare and costly replacement or refurbishment. We now all want alloys but bring back the days when wheels were inexpensive steel covered with an easy clean plastic hubcap.

VW tell me they're moving to steel and plastic for weight and aerodynamics.

It's a pity those "cheap" wheel trims are so damn expensive (£53 each I read somewhere on here) and so easily stolen or lost (if they drop off the car.

It's the obsession with diamond cut wheels that I wish the manufacturers would move away from. White worm corrosion in 34 to 30 months is almost a certainty. Give me painted alloys any day of the week. Hence, I'd have the alloys powder coated if they got scraped.
