The garage has tried everything available to them without success and from reading about other people’s experiences especially with VW we are feeling a bit hopeless.
The garage keep trying to reassure us that they will get there in the end, but when will that be? We have forgotten what our car looks like!
There is a software hotfix available to try to reinstall the 2.1 software. It gets around the need to replace the gateway ICAS1 unit. These units are in very short supply and that's causing the delays.

The hotfix doesn't work on all cars, but it seems to work on most. Ask your dealer if they're aware of this fix.
Thinking out loud really, is a bricked ICAS1 unit just a software messed up ICAS1 or a hardware faulty ICAS1? Also, is the hotfix working or not dependent on hardware issues with the ICAS1 or an issue with the previous ICAS1 software configuration? Is the hotfix overcoming software differences or hardware differences?
ICAS1 (in-car application server 1) from Continental appears to be the key component of all the computer systems within the ID.3:

Described as a high performance computer, so I guess effectively a cluster, providing AI plus connectivity to Internet. It was publicised as proven technology based on systems used in many other vehicles. It also appears to be "configured" for a specific vehicle, not sure if this is just software or jumpers and modules.
VW is just integrating the ID.3 together from hardware / IT components, I guess they have decades of experience with the hardware side, less with the IT.

The way it was explained to me is that the ICAS1 module gets stuck in programming mode and refuses to respond beyond that. That is, it's softbricked. The code that VW Wolfsburg send to the workshop is tailored to the VIN and opens the module up to allow another attempt to be made at the update. The tech said that it's a yes or no solution: if it works, all is well. If it fails then a new ICAS1 is definitely needed.

I'm waiting to see if it's a yes or no on my car.

Thanks that makes more sense.

I hope your car is ok.

I am confused about the state of my car, it has been at the dealers since last Monday awaiting information from VW. I had assumed awaiting input from VW Technical, but I just spoken to the dealer who has informed me it has been escalated by customer care to their bosses as nothing is happening with it. The technician at the dealers who is working on my car is now on holiday to next week, so I don't know whether ICAS1 failed update and hotfix was applied unsuccessfully or what. Best case scenario is car will have spent another 2 weeks at the dealer's, even if I get it back next Monday.

Getting my car back tomorrow, it's been with the dealer since 22/02!! Went in initially for the 12v battery issue as kept going flat. Was upgraded to 2.0 which needed a new control unit and then 2.1 became available. The dealer said that that they couldn't release the car back to me until 2.1 installed, control unit bust again and I've been waiting for one for a couple of weeks. Dealer got the part last Friday and update finished today. Hope it was worth the wait.....

I had my 2.1 update done around 3 weeks ago and everything went ok, apart from the door "puddle lights" still not working. So I arranged for a 'while you wait' check from a technician to resolve the problem. However, on a journey home from York I was going through a small village (Sancton) which is a 30mph zone, but the sign recognition said "80"mph. At that point my ACC presumed I was going to slow and off it went. Thankfully not for too long. It then went back to normal until I reached the M62 when it then decided it was 40mph speed limit. This is now happening constantly, so in the car went for what was originally a while you wait visit only to be told the diagnostics check has revealed numerous faults, too many for the technician to explain.
So folks 2.1 does not appear to resolve all issues.
I now have to return my car to the dealers for what could be a few days on the 20th ( earliest point at which they have a loan car).
I told the car is safe to drive but not to use ACC.
All in all VW not very happy.

The dealer says that 2.1 has been installed, but had no documentary proof - just salesman ‘word’
How can I verify this, other than the bug fixes is there any single obvious 2.1 software feature I can establish is present.
Where do I look for an installed software code?
Many thanks
Look under settings in the infotainment screen - if you scroll down you can find the software - 2.1 is shown as 0792 I think

Does anybody have a pdf version of the 2.1 Readme Document that other were given as part of the 2.1 Recall? Please could you post it in reply, thanks.

When I finally got my ID.3 back after the 2.1 recall, there was only a data protection sticker on the drivers sun visor, but no readme document and the dealer says they know nothing about this, hence my hope somebody else has it.

It would be great to see the differences without having to go through the 800 pages manual online or in the car.

My ID3 has been in for over 2 months now (I only bought it in January) to get the 2.1 upgrade, but the service team just can't get the upgrade to stick. The workshop guys are great and so are the dealership, but I am pretty fed up. VW UK have been utterly useless and there is certainly no transparency. All very well being sympathetic and I have been for the whole time, but patience is running out. I know it is a complex bit of kit, but £36000 for a car that is broken and the manufacturer can't fix?? Noone is willing to give me a new car or a refund so I am stuck with a faulty product. Get you act together VW!

Unless you intend to string it out, you need to give notice of your intent to reject immediately. Doing it within 6 months is a lot easier and if you bought in Jan, you'll be hitting that this month.

Reject it. We did that and had a free-of-charge replacement within seven weeks with a loan car during that period.

I spoke to my service company yesterday as they had to diagnose a fault, they believe the next update is coming before the end of July.

Is there any word on if there are any fixes though? Unless I have missed something, seems like it's two updates, one minor and then one major that will open up the ability to possibly buy stuff in the future. Personally right now I just want them to fix timed charging.

Nothing official, but I've read in a couple of places that timed charging won't be modified in this next round.

Seriously, what's the point of that? Fix things that aren't broken but let's not touch the things that are. I sincerely hope you're wrong.

I hope the sources I've read are wrong too, although I use the timer on my charger so this is no big deal for me personally.

My car was with the dealer for four weeks with problems updating to 2.1. (Also to have the SOS module replaced) It looked good for a couple of days after I got it back then a previous intermittent fault reappeared with a clicking noise accompanied by the passenger reading light flashing.
Then the 12 volt battery charging failed. A couple of days later the car's Internet connection failed and has been like that for two days now.
A lesser preexisting fault of reduced output from the usb sockets is still there.
I think that I have had more than my fair share of problems.
Car is ID3 1st edition registered mid December 2020. I have owned it since mid February 2021.

We call that a 'Montagsauto' in German (vehicle built on a Monday, when all the workers are still hungover from the weekend).

Sorry to hear, in the 80s my dad had a Golf GTD that qualified for the term as well.

All the best

Do I understand that the upgrade now charges the cars 12 volt battery at the same time as the cars main battery is being charged? About to fit ddpi mola n3 dash cam with hardwire to my 1st Edition now 2 year old ID3. (of which I am delighted with)

The 12V is monitored and topped up as needed, regardless of whether you’re charging the drive battery pack or not.

Would you have your dash cam on permanently or just when driving?
