I've heard back from VW HQ that there is no option to specify a dash cam on the ID3. Nor any retrofit options offered by VW. Asking if the installed ID3 camera can be used seemed far to complicated.
Looking at the Blackvue range with separate battery back up to save vehicle battery depleting. Although noting the new software/firmware does now charge the 12v battery when the main HV battery is charged.
Has anyone fitted a dash cam and if so which fuse did you use to piggy back for a "ignition" switched supply?
Thanks in anticipation.

For the better dashcams with parking monitoring, you'll need a switched live and a permanent live, as well as an Earth. You can buy a Draper circuit tester for £2 to identify live fuses, both before and after ignition is turned on, but I generally go for the central locking fuse for the permanent live and most of the others are switched (electric windows, 12V socket etc.). Just to make it tricky, some appear permanent live but are only powered for a short period after ignition is turned off.

If you intend running the cable inside the A-pillar make sure you tuck it behind the airbag rather than simply crossing in front of it.G4XUR wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 10:07 am I've heard back from VW HQ that there is no option to specify a dash cam on the ID3. Not sure if this has been mentioned before, however there appears to be an official VVV Id.3 dash cam. I found this on an Irish VW page.
It seems to have a custom designed body that presumably integrates with the sensor array in the windscreen and has a purpose made wiring loom

Hope this helps

This looks intriguing, I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has installed one of these NextBase units.
It seems to me that these are not actually official VW items. The link to Wexford VW is an Ireland dealership, and the link to 'volkswagenpartsuk' which really should be official VW is in fact a dealership called Sinclair Volkswagen (click About Us on the site to discover this). I think these are NextBase items, both the dashcam and the wiring loom, and offered by these dealerships along with their genuine VW parts.
Not that any of that detracts from their usefulness of course. I have a pair of Garmin dashcams that I retrieved from my old Passat Estate when I switched to the ID.3 and I haven't installed them in the new car yet, I'm reluctant to have anything less than a perfectly neat and inconspicuous installation and I can't see how to accomplish that. Hence I'll be interested to hear how others get on with the NextBase items.
