Hi All, does anyone have any experience with 100kW charging. I've used two different units now (BP Pulse and Ionity) and neither have reported charging at more than circa 70kW? Regards.

Charge rates depend on a number of things:

State of the car's charge (100kW only for the first 30% or so, after 30% the rate gradually ramps down. It varies model to model, some hold the rate up longer.

Temperature of the battery. If the battery is cold, or too hot, the car will throttle the charge rate to avoid damaging it.

Current availability at the charger. If the charger is too hot it will slow the charge rate. Also if the supply maximum is reached the charger will limit charge rate to 'balance' the grid. This can happen if in a rank of chargers a lot are in use at once, for instance. Or if a high current load is in use elsewhere on the same supply, as can happen in industrial areas.

Finally, sometimes you get lower charge rates because the charger is pants....

Even if you turn up with a warm battery (temperature outside is warm or you've been hammering it on a motorway for 30 minutes) you'll only get 100kw probably for the first 30% or so, it will slow down a bit after that. After 50% it will start slowing down more to the point where you will probably only get around 35kw from 65-80%. After 80% then it will be snails pace.

The ID.3 actually has a very good DC charging profile. It will charge at its maximum 100kW as others have said from 0% up to about 30%, then the rate ramps down until it gets to 70% when it's charging at 50kW, which it holds up till 80% and then drops progressively to 100%.

Interesting responses. Thanks. My only comparison was regularly using Ecotricity 50kw chargers on a BMW i3 and also the ID3 where I'd only noticed the over 80%/90% drop off of the charge rate.

:D Congratulations on finding an Ecotricity charger that actually worked! None working at Lymm or Knutsford on the M6 Monday pm. ZapMap constantly records “Issues” on the “Electric Highway”
Anybody else cheesed off with it?

Yes.

Ecotricity is the least reliable network. However they've recently teamed up with Gridserve and are replacing their existing hardware with new and hopefully more reliable units, as phase one of the Gridserve collaboration. Phase 2 is to install 6- and 12-unit facilities and key motorway locations around the country. The first of these has already gone online at the Rugby services, Junction 1 on the M6.

Used one recently at Rugby services on the M6. 350kw chargers, 30p per kw/h. Very good.
