Recommend home charger

Post by Trantor » Thu May 27, 2021 4:15 pm

I'm soon to become an ID.3 owner, my first EV, so need to have a home charger installed. I'd like some advice and/or recommendations regarding which one works best with the ID.3.

I suppose my key requirements is that either via the car, or the charger, I can program in scheduled charging to make use of off-peak tariffs. I've had quotes to install a Zappi and the dealer I bought the car from works with a company that installs Rolec chargers. I'd also add that I don't have any solar panels so not a consideration on that front.

Looking at past comments in ID3 forums there has been a history of the Zappi not communicating with the car, or vice versa, and scheduled charging does not start. Is this still a problem or has it been fixed?

Any suggestions gratefully received.
Prospective ID.3 owner. Currently drive Polo GTI+. Located East Dorset, UK.

You probably dont need to pay out the extra cost for the zappi. I have the sync ev and schedule charging works good from the charger. The eo mini pro seems to work also as well.

Pod Point Solo, allows a scheduled programme and does not require an earth rod it also has auto power balancing to limit your home circuit loading.

Zappi. £600 after the grant.

It doesn't need an earth rod, will load balance, customer support is the best and we are able to use surplus solar (3kW earlier today) from our solar PV panels to top up when the sun shines.

Make sure you get quotes from local installers. Nationals were quoting us £1200+!

£600 for a Zappi? More like £850-900 from my experience.

Which is why I didn’t get one, even though I have a solar installation - the extra cost over a Pod Point just wasn’t worth it with my solar output.

You appear to be doubting what I have said...

I cannot account for your experience, but £600 wasn't the cheapest quote I got. It was £20 more but I liked the way the installer quoted.

From the manufacturer, one of the most well-known installers, plus the installer who I used:

https://myenergi.com/product/zappi/
https://www.smarthomecharge.co.uk/charg ... v-charger/
https://www.mrcharger.co.uk/ev-charging ... -charging/

And I've read in multiple online forums and groups that people typically pay £800-900.

If you've had one supplied and installed for £600, that's great.

You may have read that 'people typically pay £800-900' but that doesn't mean you should sow any doubt on the fact that I paid £600. Calling someone's honesty into doubt on zero evidence is not a good look.

I don't think your word or honesty was being questioned, I think it was surprise at the cost. £600 for installation is phenomenal value when you consider the Zappi and a Typical Type A RCD are the best part of £765 alone. With the £350 grant the installer was charging you less than £200 for the installation!!
