Hi Everyone,
My maiden post! Just joined the forum and soon to join ID.3 Owers Club, but I have a few questions regarding the Tech model that I'm hoping to purchase. I know I could refer these questions to my VW dealer but I'm not sure I have the greatest confidence in the 20-something young lad that described the 204HP motor as having a bigger battery that gives it more zip!

1. The Tech model has a single-zone Climatronic climate system, and I'm aware from this forum that voice commands don't work with this system. My first question is will there be any problems using this system (as opposed to a dual-zone system found on some other models) with WeConnect for remotely pre-heating car/car seats/steering wheel?

2. The model in-stock comes with 19" Andoya alloys, rather than the standrd 18" East Derry alloys. I test drove a car with the 18" wheels and found the ride on the firm side. My question is whether I would find the 19" wheels even firmer on the road? The dealer isn't in a position to let me test drive the model with 19" wheels. As the dealer is looking for €611 extra for the 19" wheels I would be happy to request that they be substituted with 18" East Derry alloys, but I'm not sure the dealer will accommodate this request. On a related matter can anyone confirm if the 18" tyres are of the Airstop variety described for the 19" tyres?

Any help appreciated...

I would expect the 19” ride to be firmer than 18”, but then I’ve only driven 19” (the demo car and my own).

Only the 19” and 20” tyres include the puncture resistance technology, the 18” tyres aren’t anything special but have sealant inside them.

Hi
I have 18” steel wheels on mine and the ride is good and after a month I think they look ok, and had positive comments about how nice they are.
I was thinking of going for the alloys but I’m happy with what I’ve got.
If you go for the bigger rims it will affect the range , if it’s a concern for you.
As to climate control I try not to use it much, again due to reduction in range

Whilst the lack of sidewall on the bigger rims will make the ride more noticeably harsh, I doubt there would be any quantifiable difference in range, especially when weight comes into the equation? Even the 20" rims only have a 7.8mm difference in circumference.

Got to love how we do Rims in Inches and Tyres in mm....

I don’t have any personal experience of the range difference my comment was based on what I saw on you tube reviews.

Reviewers have generally suggested that the larger wheels give a firmer ride (perhaps because their lower profile tyres result in a smaller air cushion between the wheel and the road?). I find my 19" wheels give a fairly firm ride but on decent road surfaces it's very smooth and comfortable, while on poor roads the firmness is reassuring - you feel the car is not going to lose its grip on the road.

There seem to be be many people who dislike the 18" steel wheels, but I think they look good and cost less. I wouldn't have minded steels but my 1st Edition didn't have that option.

Thanks to all for the feedback on the wheels. The dealer has confirmed he can secure the Tech model for me with the 18" East Derry alloy wheels that I had on the test drive model, so I'm happy with that.

Any owners of the Life, Business or Tech models out there who could comment on the first question in relation to WeConnect and the climate/heating system?

On my ID.3 pre-heating / stationary air conditioning only work when the car is plugged in

To me this is a fault with my ID.3 as myVolkswagen specification states the car has:
"Air conditioning system Climatronic with enhanced air filter with activated carbon and stationary air conditioning"
I am awaiting a clear response from VW on this fault.

That description above isn't contrary to what you're experiencing. I don't know whether it should be able to aircon statically while unplugged (I'd expect minimum battery reserve to allow it to take place if spec allows it).

My 1st Edition can pre-heat without being plugged in.

When delivered at the beginning of 2021 my ID3 was the same - Pre-conditioning using the app only worked when the car was plugged in. After having the software updated I can now reliably precondition anywhere using the app (as long as there is mobile coverage!). I would check the version of your car's s/w on-screen (its in the vehicle menu somewhere I recall) and talk to the dealer if it is out of date (really old 2020 versions of the s/w cannot update over-the-air either).

Thanks, I am talking to VW Executive Office who informed me my ID.3 was not able to pre-heat when unplugged, which I am pretty sure is rubbish and the dealer is trying to get a resolution. Car spent 38 days getting the 2.1 recall, plus 5 days at VWs request looking at the faults remaining, and 20 days latter is still an ongoing saga. Latest suggestion from my dealer is that the car will need to go to Newcastle to be looked at.
VE Customer Service and Executive Office have been no help with this issue, every few days I get emails saying they have spoken to the dealer and if I don't reply in 3 days they will close the call, obviously they haven't listened to the dealer as the dealer is very frustrated that they have not been able to fix what they believe is an issue, with VW Technical replying the car does not have this feature, yet they know every other ID.3 does.
It is a shame that it is not possible to have a direct conversation with somebody in VW Technical or Factory how actually knows and has access to all the software / hardware details behinds the ID.3.
So yes my car is on 0792 (2.1), I don't whether there is one module that did not update and whether something so simple is the cause of my problem. I do know something is wrong(? incorrectly set up) with the car as I can not switch on Air Condition Now when leaving unless it is plugged in.

Ah. I hope I haven't given misleading info in my previous post. Simonrg, I gather your problem is with switching on Air Condition Now, on the car's infotainment screen, when leaving the car. I've never tried doing that.

I use the We Connect ID app on my (Android) phone, and tap the Air Conditioning 'Start' button. That works, and the car doesn't have to be plugged in.

Thanks you haven't misled me. The whole thing is confusing VW has lost the plot.

I found the app works to heat plugged in but not when unplugged, so as I didn't want to get fobbed off with the fact it was an app issue, I tried "Air Condition Now" and sure enough it works plugged in but not unplugged, so issue with car not app.

Car spent 5 day at dealers VW told dealer via garbled 7 word TPI that car did not have remote air conditioning, which I just don't believe is really the case, I suspect mis-configuration of car is issue - I did wonder about an option to car to stop this, but I can't find it, as obviously unplugged air conditioning could eat battery.

Dealer is still trying to find out how to correct this fault.

I don't know if you resolved this or not. But your ID3 has the same fault as mine did. My local VW workshop finally fixed it in the spring at the same time as doing the 2.1 upgrade. I ultimately stirred VW into action by emailing weconnect-support@volkswagen.de to report the fault and had a back and forth conversation with the VW mothership over a week or two - they agreed it was probably a h/w fault and contacted my local VW workshop to tell them what needed doing. job done.

On the question of whether the 18" Derry alloys have the "airstop" functionality - something I like the idea of - I note that in the latest downloadable brochure it states that they do (along with the 19/20" alloys) but the online configurator contradicts this (also highlighting the inclusion of a tyre repair kit - removed if the 19/20" are selected).

Anyone got a definitive answer on this one?

Cars with 18” wheels/tyres have the tyre kit because the tyres do not have puncture protection like the 19” and 20” ones.

Unless something has changed now for the first time since launch 10 months ago.
