Home charging fitting

Hi,
Just waiting for my ID3 and having a home charger fitted
Using podpoint as recommended by VW
Are they any good ?
Is there a better/cheaper option?
There is a choice of a wall socket, so you have to plug in a cable, or one with a permanent attached cable.
The permanent attached cable seems a much better idea for convenience, and I guess the socket type is pretty fixed now for when I get a new car.
Is that that right assumption?
My charger will be on a driveway, not sure if I need a charger lock ...
What do you guys think ?

I'm awaiting fitment of an Sync EV.
I chose this as its small and seems to have all the features I need (including 3/4g) - and is fairly cheap (£550 inc install and grant etc..)
I avoided the podpoints as a couple of neigbours have them and whilst its a matter of personal taste they look like a great big UFO thats splatted against the wall
ie - not especially small or discrete....
I wanted one without a tethered cable - again so its just a bit neater and hard to notice.

I've got a Podpoint with a tethered connection and it's always worked fine and now it has timed charging its even better as the id3 timing is one step up from useless . Can't envisage any security problems as someone would have to stop on my drive for several hours to get a decent charge

I deliberately chose tethered to avoid faffing about with cables, therefore a Pod Point was a good option as the cable loops neatly around the outside of - unlike most other points where you end up with dangling loops of cable.
I wouldn't bother with a lock, juice theft isn't really a thing.
If you go away for any length of time you can always flick the RCD on your consumer unit, or just leave a timed charge set in the middle of the night in the Pod Point app - anyone plugging in outside of the schedule won't get any juice anyway.

I’ve just had the Sync EV fitted today, very pleased with it, it’s actually just inside our garage, plan to probably use it a bit like a tethered charger and leave cable attached, husband has yet to find some sort of cable holder, it’s sleek and compact and easy to use so far so very happy this end
Magic - as I've not (yet) had mine fitted might I ask how much it was>? Mine was via evolutionsolutions (from the EV website form) and £550 ish....yummymummy11 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 2:33 pm I’ve just had the Sync EV fitted today, very pleased with it, it’s actually just inside our garage, plan to probably use it a bit like a tethered charger and leave cable attached, husband has yet to find some sort of cable holder, it’s sleek and compact and easy to use so far so very happy this end
We have a tethered zappi. Plenty of useful features including the ability to use surplus solar output from our 4kW panels.

Just ordered an ID.3 that should be with me in a week or so. So I now need to sort a charger out sharpish. Do you mind me asking how long lead times were from ordering to install for you all, please?

My Pod Point Solo was supplied and installed by Mr Charger after 8 calendar days: https://www.mrcharger.co.uk/
I was in a hurry, their price was fair and their work was excellent.
10 weeks and still waiting after the contractor identified a loop supply from photos I sent them. A common issue that nobody tells you about. Case is now with power suppler to resolve. Their contractor came last week and all looks well but official report has to be submitted and processed by supplier and they the charger contractor needs to reschedule. Not expecting anything soon. I'm lucky to have local BP pulse chargers offering free charges with subscription.

We were £640 still have the Scottish EST grant to claim back from that cost but includes the UK government grant, we required an additional consumer unit fitted in our garage and some other bits and bobs upgraded, it was Bumblebee we went with in the end and it was a semi local company sub contracted that came to fit, all done within 3-4 weeks, would have been 2 weeks if I’d accepted the first appointment offered, hope this helpsMotMot wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 2:49 pmMagic - as I've not (yet) had mine fitted might I ask how much it was>? I went for an ID3 test drive on Thursday 20th May. I was impressed; by the 24th I'd placed an order with delivery on Thursday 17th June, allowing time to organise insurance, an RFID card for Charge Place Scotland, and a charger. My first contact, via the OLEV website, wasted quite some time as the installer was over 150 miles away, and expensive. I was at the time interested in Ohme, and asked for a quote from their website. The response was from an outfit in Edinburgh, still 150 miles away! However two things occurred. He recommended that I look at the Zappi since it is able to use my solar panels. I’d already dismissed the Pod Point after all the bad press on this forum!
On the 1st June I submitted a form and photographs for an ‘at distance’ pre-installation check. I spoke to the outfit in Edinburgh, and everything was suitable for a standard installation - to be carried out by a local electrician! The quote was more than I’d hoped for, but after the OLEV grant (£350), plus the Energy Savings Trust (Scotland only) grant of £250, plus another £100 for living in a remote area I paid £590. With a pick up date for the car of the 17th June, I arranged for installation of the Zappi on the 18th June.
The installation was very professional; it took three hours, and later that same day I was topping up the car on free sunshine. So, in answer to the original query, less than two weeks from start to finish, but I'm sure that had I collected the car earlier I could have had the installation of the Zappi earlier too.

Excellent news. I suppose it does show that you can get a good deal on fitting. It is handy that the Scottish Gov. do the extra EST grant. I would have liked that here!

You got an extra £350 in subsidies over the rest of the UK and it will still cost you £590? There's some serious misuse of tax payers money going on there. I bet if the grant went up to £1000 tomorrow, the installers would still find a way to invoice £1500 and charge the end user £500 of it.Raxacorico wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 6:08 pm I went for an ID3 test drive on Thursday 20th May. I have decided to go with pod-point. I was tempted by the EO box, particularly due to its size, but the idea of a tethered cable for convenience, VW recommendation and relative price were the deciders.
The base price including grant is £599, however they might charge me extra, as my garage is at the opposing end of the garden to the house, and therefore some cabling across the garden will be needed.
I live in London, so luckily no remote area
Fingers crossed ....
