What if the only car available has the heat pump? Asking for trouble (reliability), or just more money?

Just more money. I wouldn't expect the heat pump to make the car less reliable overall. If it was a case of accelerating delivery for ~£1000, you should just ask yourself whether you want to spend that money or not.

Maybe if you absolutely MUST have the maximum time/distance between charges.

We got it on the basis that anything that extends range is expected to be key to resale value in a few years. Ask me how it panned out when I get there!

All the best

So did you actually spec it? Or was it already on a car that was available to buy?

I specced it, and managed to get the car exactly as I wanted it within two weeks as the dealer had it ordered as stock. It was also the cheapest offer, so hey presto.

All the best

My reason for asking about the heat pump, is that the dealer is saying that it is the only version of an ID3 he can get hold of this side of 2022. I was originally going for a basic car. A Pro version, where the only option would be metallic paint. They originally told me that they could get one of those by swapping a car with another dealership. It now transpires that that can't happen. So I have to decide if I want to spend the extra on what has become a Pro Performance with heat pump, alloys & metallic paint. Whilst this dealer is being polite about all this (if not very communicative - they don't return calls), I am now a bit wary of them. I have never dealt with VW before but they are only car dealers after all. Decisions, decisions!

Yup that is indeed about the long and short of it. If I were in a similar position I'd just search Autotrader and make a few calls to a few other dealers claiming to have stock. If you find a car in stock more suited to your price point then make a quick decision and secure it there and then. If you don't find anyone with any suitable stock then it's a straight-up cost decision to get the car sooner or wait.

Having looked through the only version of the owners manual I can find on-line (Version 1 I think), it doesn't seem to mention the heat pump at all. Is the operation all automatic or are there controls for it?

It’s completely automatic.
