New rear tyres at 12000? Really?

I've just been advised that my rear tyres need replacing. The car has done just over 12,000 miles. The car was in for the software update otherwise I would not have even thought about checking them yet.

Is this normal and to be expected?

Research on line seems to suggest that they should last longer because they are made to withstand the additional weight they are carrying but I'd love to know how long the tyres are lasting for other people.

I've just had to replace my rear 19" Bridgestone Turanzas at 14.5k miles, although they were very marginal for the final 500 miles or so.

I've read so many negative comments about the Bridgestones that I've replaced them with Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance SealTech, so it will be interesting to see how they compare.

It's fairly common for the Bridgestones to go even earlier than that apparently. Mine has 18" Continentals, which seem to be lasting fairly well - or were at 7k miles ish. I'm currently half way back from a trip to France where we have ticked over 10k, planning to measure them again when I get home.
To be honest, having driven a couple of other hatchbacks with over 200bhp, albeit FWD... I have seen worse than 12k! It's not great but it's not terrible and you should definitely be checking them before that.

What tread depth is left? Yours and the dealership's opinion of changing may not align
Many dealers would replace when they get down to 3mm, even though the legal limit is 1.6mm. 2mm is the more reasonable side of caution for the Summer at least. OEM Bridgestone Turanzas fitted to VAG EVs only come with 5.9mm tread. Considering most tyres come with 7.4 or 8.0mm, you could say that these Bridgestones already have 40% less useable tread than most other tyres. The fact they've worn out is a blessing, Bridgestone tyres are absolutely crap as a "top tier" tyre.

Monkey hanger, I think you made a typing error with the legal limit being 1.6mm across Central 3/4 of tyre. Rest of post is reading right and suggests it was a typo ;)

Yep, typo - too much Tequila at the pool bar this afternoon (I'm on holiday in Mexico).

He told me it was 1.6.

If I am going to change tyre, are there any recommendations for something other than Bridgestone? With more tread to start with, perhaps.

I’ll have a look and see what we’ve got on ours, we have 19’s and covered over 25000 with around 4mm left

Continental ecocontact 6

I had 18's with Bridgestones and got 8000 out of the rears. (still have the fronts in the garage in case of a puncture)
Replaced with Michelin ePrimacy's which have lost about 1mm after 7000 miles.

Got Continental Ecocontact 6 on my Tour (19 inch) - 17,000 miles and still 5mm left on rears.

The Continental Ecocontact 6 that our 2 Borns came on are excellent in every aspect but one - they are incredibly thin, which makes them prone to punctures - I replaced one at about 2000 miles. It looked more like an oversized pushbike tyre.

If I were buying from scratch, I would probably go Michelin Primacy (but they might also be thin if thin tyres is an EV thing for EV sized tyres).

Oh, lord! Just when I thought it was safe to order the Continentals. How can they be making top end tyres that are too thin to resist punctures?

Not my experience - the guy was unlucky. The Continental Ecocontact 6's that VW fit are also self sealing (contiseal) allegedly good for punctures up to 5mm diameter.

Only the 19 inch versions are self seal - same as the Bridgestones. The 18" Conti Ecocontacts 6s are not self-sealing. This is fine though as in either size one is like-for-like for the other. No puncture concern here after 10700 miles on 18" Contis. N=1 etc.

There are a lot more Born owners with fitment of 19" wheels than ID3s - due to standard V2 equipment spec rather than a £1300 option most ID3 Owners shy away from (1st edition ID3 owners excepted). Lots of us on the Cupra forum have had a puncture already, and when you see the flat tyre creased up on the tarmac, you'll appreciate how thin they are vs any other tyre I've ever had a flat with - even the fitter at national commented how many self sealing Contis they bin for punctures, and the self sealing only works on a puncture accross the central 90% of the tread.

I was able to drive mine to NationalTyres 6 Mike's away only after putting a large can of Holts Tyre Weld in the tyre and stopping twice on the way to make sure tyre pressure didn't drop below 2 bar.

I don't think I've been unlucky.

I’m guessing at the moment at least that they’ll be more id3’s on the road with 19’s on than Cupra
borns and surly the id3’s will of covered a higher total mileage being an older car so you’d expect that this would of come up a few times on the forum by now?

I didn’t think that the conti’s would of lasted over 25000 miles but so far no punctures so one of us must have either good or bad luck, I’ll have a flat today now!
