ID3 or MG4
Hi guys my name is Mark and I am new here and am looking for some realistic guidance and advice. I currently have a renault Zoe on lease which is coming to its end in the next few months. I was going to get a 2nd hand Tesla as a replacement however due to the antics of their CEO I have gone off that idea.
I am torn between the ID3 and the MG4 long range. I am struggling to find answers to my questions by searching online so I thought I would join this forum in order to get a better idea of the good and bad points of the ID3 and if it would be more suitable for myself than the MG4.
I am looking for guidance on the real world range of I think its the 61kw battery and also looking to see if the GOM is accurate and also I am struggling with all the different trim levels and what they actually mean and what you are actually getting for your money. I also need to know what the real rapid charge speed is as I do travel down south sometimes and the Zoe's 50kwh just doesnt cut it.
I do prefer the looks of the ID3 so if I can get the answers I am looking for I will most likely take the plunge and go with that.
Thanks in advance for any guidance and advice you can offer.

Without going into specifics (there are far more knowledgeable people on here) my own personal opinion is the ID3 is a much better car overall. There are things which people don’t like about the VW (haptic steering wheel controls). I did consider the MG4 but my test drive was a disaster. Just one example of my reason not to go with the MG was when I closed the hatch. It sounded and felt like it had been made of old baked bean can steel. Good luck with your decision.
The ID.3 is great and I really like it. It does have a few quirks of course but overall it is very good I’d say. I didn’t consider the MG myself as I really don’t like the looks and it doesn’t have a good reliability record. Some of the build quality issues also look questionable too. Also from a personal perspective, it’s Chinese.
In my experience the GOM is reasonably accurate.

I'm not sure whether you are looking at new or used ID3s.
On new ID3s you can now get 52, 59 or 77kwh usable batteries.
For most used ID3s (until just the last couple of months) the options were 58kwh or 77kwh (and for a very short period a couple of years back, 45kwh). The 59 replaced the 58. These are the most popular ones. The 58 used to be advertised as 62kwh gross so that may be where you got 61 from?
Based on tests I've seen, the ID3 58 and MG4 64 have very similar real world range as the ID3 is marginally more efficient. But I haven't driven the MG4 myself. You get 200-210 miles in the ID3 in summer and 170-180 miles in winter on the motorway if you stick to 70mph. You can obviously get more if you drive slower, I have seen over 5 mi/kwh on (flat) 50mph roads in summer.
The GOM becomes accurate once you are most of the way in to a long journey. It's not accurate for the start of a long motorway trip if you have been doing short local trips all week. Same can be said of almost any car.
Charging speed depends on whether you are looking new or used. The 59 and new 77 kwh batteries charge better than the old ones, and they have pre heating available too, which older cars don't - this makes it easier to get fast charging speeds in winter.
In an older 58kwh ID3 like mine, you can get up to 130kw in summer. However it's critical to plug in below 10-15% SoC and with a warm battery. If I drive a true 70mph on the motorway and then plug in below 10% I get 110-130kw in summer and 80-100kw in winter. If you tend to drive at 60mph it'll be slower charging in winter because the battery won't warm up. Similar applies if you plug in at 25% instead of 15%. If you chug along with the lorries and plug in at 30%, you only see 50kw ish.
The new 59kwh battery charges really well, up to over 160kw. The MG4 is somewhere in between the two, it does charge well from what I've seen. If you are looking used I think this is it's best point. I would go ID3 every day though. We really like ours, to the extent after 2 years we bought an ID4 too. The ID4 doesn't drive as well as the ID3 though.

We had an MG4 for a month while VW sourced a replacement headlight last year. The car is nice enough but two things annoyed me compared to ID3. First (minor) was that it had only one steering wheel heat setting (the id3 has 3) which I found too hot. Second (major) was that the automatic cruise control was rubbish. In particular it brakes too harshly. The ID3 does a much smoother job. In virtually all car reviews no one mentions what a great piece of kit the ACC in the ID3 is. You do pay more ( although currently can get a new id3 with £8.5k off if take finance) but it is a much better engineered car and that without latest s/w updates.

The ID3 is definitely not perfect, and I'm sure some of its quirks and features will put off some people - but that's true of any car. I haven't tried the MG, but Which wasn't particularly impressed: while they liked the motor and its performance, they say visibility is poor (which would put me off), and it only gets 3 stars for "comfort and practicality" vs the ID3's 4. On the other hand, they approved of the MG's 7 year warranty.
The ID3 has some features which I wish were more common. The hatch has grab points for closing, which not only are easier for most people to reach than the outer panel, these are always clean and dry - unlike the outer surface. Despite the wiper movements being biased towards left-hand driver position, the wipers do sweep both sides of the screen edge-to-edge (see viewtopic.php?t=403.
Hope this helps.

My daughter has recently traded in her MG4 for an ID3. She reports slightly lower economy, and not such a strong one foot driving. However better quality and she is very pleased with the ID3

I've had a 2020 58kWh ID3 for 5 years and I've never seen it charge faster than 95kW, usually more like 50kW. This is on long trips as otherwise I charge at home. It includes summer. Perhaps I never go below 10%. Do you find that faster charging is maintained or does it reduce once you get to, say, 20%?sidehaas wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2025 5:02 pm

For 58kwh ID3s the peak is pretty brief. If you plug in at very low SoC in perfect conditions, I think it'll start at a little above 100kw, rise to a peak at 134kw around 16-17% ish, then gradually fall, passing back below 100kw at around 30% (then obviously continue gradually falling).steve wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 1:26 pmI've had a 2020 58kWh ID3 for 5 years and I've never seen it charge faster than 95kW, usually more like 50kW. Hi mark welcome to the group , as most have pointed out I would second the I.D 3 is a far better car all round than the I.d3 , I have always had Vws but decided to try everything including the Chinese brands but the build quality was poor and looking at reviews they seem to have a lot of problems with reliability just now ! It’s also a good thing supporting the European car market rather than Chinese
Good luck with the search would love to hear what you go for .

Here's my take. I was torn between the same. And both had niggles. The MG4 dial would be annoying. But the ID.3 "gear" selector on the right was going to be annoying as I was used to a "stick" on my old e-208 to do the same with my left hand that's doing nothing anyway.
But in the 5 days I've had the ID.3 I am positive it was the right choice.
ID3 Pro S Match 77kwh
I just drove from York to Whitby and home, 100 miles, steep hills and 10c weather.
The trip there averaged 4.76 miles/kWh (Trinity) and 4.09 miles/kWh (Trinity). I starter the trip with 95% battery and was home was 67% after 100 miles almost.
Less than 1/3 of the battery for that trip at 10c. Kinda means 300 miles real world? I didn't have much air con on, don't need it for most of the trip. I did turn it on to demoist the windows now and again. But the regen was ridiculous so no range loss...
So in summer does that mean a better efficiency?
Motorways will be different, we shall see on Saturday when I drive up to see the parents.
But yeah. In love with this car.
