The heat pump is still highlighted specifically as a recommended option on the configurator.

So does this mean VW will also be offering refunds for misleading people over the range of the ID.3 -

Here VW say you should expect a range of 300 - 420km, 189 - 265miles - roughly 75-110% of WLTP which is in line with other EVs on the market and experience of my friends with EVs.

To date my ID.3 has only managed 60% - 90% - driving either rural journeys or constant speed A road journeys - so the type of journeys VW highlight in the video.

Others have reported considerably better ranges.

So have I not only been sold an underperforming heat pump but also an underperforming ID.3?

Or are other ID.3s also experiencing ranges that are below the minimum of 189miles stated in this video?

Not sure the heat pump is relevant for range except in cold weather. The heat pump only works in cold weather and expands the mileage if you are using the heater. It is standard in Teslas for example. Generally all electix cars underperform for battery life in cold weather

Generally electric cars get much less rangr then their manufactures stated, however the ID3 is quite good in that repect:

You have to look at the type of driving. In town you can get more then the recommended, on motorways generally less

The point was more that VW is admitting it is guilty over misleading people with promises that are not delivered as is the case with the heat pump, as VW has stated. I feel it should do the same over the promised range.

As you say speed etc has a big effect which is what VW also state in the video, however in winter at 130km/hour they say that you will still get 75% of WLTP this is not the case.

The ID.3 seems to be considerably worse than other EVs where 25% is the maximum lost, whereas at 130km/hour in winter loss is nearer to 40%, very disappointing.

As it gets colder, say below zero and descending, which is uncommon for long in most of the UK, thats where one gets most of the benefits, according to the tests

I am not sure that nextmve story is correct, VW says a software fault put it in dehumidifier mode, rather then heating, which was corrected in a software update this year.

I dont think the heat pump story is over. There are software updates, and it does apparently achieve at least10% more battery when cold

However you are right, if VW compensated folk in Europe, why not in UK ?

I have a new ID3 on order, and I specified the heatpump as an option. I am still happy to have it. I personally can see Li batterys store much less charge in winter on all my devices, so any kind of heating will be useful for cold weather. The UK is kind of a marginal case, as if we have a very cold winter, it would be worth it. If I was living in Singapore I wouldn't have bothered and if I lived in Iceland its probably essential .....

On collecting my ID.3 having finally had the air con system set-up corrected, the dealer mentioned that VW would be paying me £250 to compensate for the poor performance of the heat pump.

I hope this is compensation for the inconvenience caused the current poor performance of the heat pump and that future software upgrades will achieve the specified efficiencies.

I think the science behind the heat pump is solid, and so is VW's implementation
I am sure it will improve with software updates
30% was over enthusiastic, I think its been measured at 10% but mostly at below zero temperatures
The price has now been reduced to £1000, from the £1260 previously
If I lived in scotland it would be a good consideration, not sure its so useful in london but if you can afford it why not

would be interested in peoples experiences this winter coming with the new software.

Finally received my £260 refund last week after having to 'chase-up' the local dealer many times. I was originally asked for my bank details back in August this year but that was it. Apparantly, it looks like the dealers in general aren't contacting those who are due refunds, most rely on you contacting them. They have to pay you the money and then claim it backfrom VW and they receive a £10 handling fee. If you haven't had it yet then ask your dealer now!

I ordered mine in August with a heatpump and paid £1,000 for the option. It should be standard as it is in certain other markets.

My view was that it was marginal in the south of the UK but I do travel long distance to Scotland and Germany in the winter and an extra 10% range might well come in handy on cold journeys. My other thought was that this 10% may improve with software updates. My final thought was that it would make the car more efficient for its entire lifespan not just my ownership. VW must view it as marginal for the UK as well as it is standard in Scandinavia.
