Pulled from SpeakEV post…

“ A woman in Groningen (The Netherlands) had put her son in the backseat and then went to unplug the car from the street charger. She saw smoke coming out from the car so immediately grabbed her kid and got away. The car was quickly consumed by flames. The report says that it is likely a technical fault that led to the fire.”

Mental note to self: don't leave kids in car while charging.

All the best

This is the first known VW MEB platform vehicle to catch fire. VW are still investigating the cause.

ICE vehicles catch fire all the time. My MK1 Ford Escort died in flames on one of the Merry Hill Centre’s car parks in Dudley many moons ago.

Totally unreasonable to expect what is effectively MK1 technology in EV’s to not suffer from the occasional fire.

More than 11,000 accidental (ie. not arson) vehicle fires per year in England.

Don’t lose sleep over this.

As somebody else alluded, any car can catch fire if a fault occurs. We had a Vauxhall some years ago, although it didn't actually catch fire, when I turned on the ignition, there were sparks and smoke coming from under the dashboard. We got out pretty sharpish.

The batteries are designed that if a short occurs a circuit protector prevents the battery from burning, looking at the speed the firemen put this out I would be wondering if the battery was to blame. could have been an electrical fire from the charger. or a simple short from the HV loom and the seats and internals acted as fuel. whos to say!!

That's a great stat. Where does that come from?

I found a report online via a Google search, it was from the fire service or the government.

People keep jumping on these EV fires. I’m friends with a firefighter, as above iCE fires are extremely common call outs and I don’t see that BEVS are more likely to catch fire.

What emergency services are more interested in is ensuring they have the equipment and training necessary to respond to BEV incidents just as effectively as they do ICE incidents
