3.2 Update woes

My car has been at the dealership since Thursday last week and today's Friday - so into a second week. When I booked the car in I was told it would be an overnight job and therefore I would be supplied a courtesy car. When I delivered the car I was told the job was 'usually two days but it can take up to a week'.

There are three recalls: Software 3.2, Battery module health check and replacement if necessary, and Goodyear 19" tyres - a batch which can develop cracks in the sidewalls.

I have just had a call from the dealership - my car's software update failed 'on the last little bit' and they are repeating that step. Apparently the car has passed its battery module health check and therefore the car will not need to be sent to their High Voltage specialist centre in Exeter. But my car has been fitted with four new Goodyear tyres - which is a great result since my car is approaching three years old and the tyres would probably have needed replacing to get the car through its first MOT in October. The man on the phone said I've saved myself £1000 on the tyres, which may be true at VW dealership tyre prices, but my local tyre centre fits these tyres for £150 each. However it's still saved me £600 which makes me very happy.

Now, of course, I'm on tenterhooks, hoping the software update will be successful. What will I do (what will VW do) if it persistently fails? The dealership mentioned that they have another car that has repeatedly failed its software update, for three weeks so far.

I'd have hoped that VW would have got their act together, three years on from the launch of the car. Clearly they're still struggling. From what I gather, it appears that the software has to be downloaded into the car from VW's servers, and this process is very slow and sometimes crashes, leading to the failure of a module update. This is unsurprising if every ID.3 worldwide has to have the update installed, and it's a lot of data, and VW have inadequate server facilities, and no-one has worked out how to dump all the required data to each local dealership so that they can install to cars locally without overloading VW servers. I've tried very hard to remain loyal to VW, who do make very good cars, but I feel I must point out that Tesla have this stuff wrapped up.

Update: I collected my car from the dealership today, it now has four Bridgestone tyres in place of the nearly-worn-out Goodyears. For free, so that's a win.

The software update has worked and provided extra functions. I used the SHOP button on the infotainment screen to sign up for We Connect and We Connect Plus subscriptions. We Connect is free for an unlimited time, We Connect Plus is free for three years. I expect they'll charge an annual fee after that.

The car was reporting Software 3.1 but almost immediately it offered an OTA update, which installed quickly and now the car says Software 3.2

Reconnecting the car to the VW app on my phone was a bit glitchy but it's gone through okay now. I was expecting to be able to see if the car is locked, but so far I haven't found that to be the case. Maybe it takes a while to activate?

I'm now considering switching my energy tariff to Intelligent Octopus to save some money. I understand the ID.3 with Software 3.2 is compatible with the tariff, and so is my Myenergi Zappi chargepoint.

All sounds good.
Ref lock status, check you have enabled permissions in the car (user ,emu, privacy settings) and in the app (settings menu, mobile online services). It can also take a few days (or at least, did for people who had 3.0 OTA, and I expect it's similar here). It'll appear as a tiny padlock symbol at the top of the main app screen next to your car's name.

Interesting that you got replacement Goodyears as I had only read about people being supplied Continentals (as we were). Perhaps they need to get the tyres replaced sooner rather than later and have gone elsewhere.

Thanks for this. I can see the tiny padlock symbol. I guess that is the indicator that the car is locked. The function is supposed to cover lock, windows and lights - so I'll have to experiment to see how the app shows that windows are open/lights are on.

Not sure about lights. It shows windows and doors very obviously on the car image - they are highlighted red.

Having experimented, yes the image of the car changes. If anything's amiss it shows a rear view of the car. Doors show open in red, windows show down in red, lights show the tail-lights glowing. This is odd since if the lights are NOT on, the tail lights still show red, but not glowing. You have to know the difference! If none of these are amiss, the car shows diagonal front view. The only thing not indicated on the image is door locked status, which shows as a padlock, either open or closed, to the left of the car's name above the image.
